In the flow of the farm-to-table movement, LaLoo’s is making waves (and maybe even a few “baa’s”) in the ice cream section. Their 100 percent goat milk concoctions deliver about half the fat of traditional ice creams, offer a tasty alternative to those with lactose intolerance, and tout all-natural, non-GMO and gluten free ingredients.
Goat’s milk is known for being a healthier, calcium-rich alternative to cow’s milk, abet a distinctly different tasting one. The biggest advantage goat’s milk has over cow’s milk is the ease of digestion which is primarily attributed to it’s low lactose and lower fat content. While relatively obscure in the US, over half the world population consumes goat’s milk regularly.
As a fan of chevre, I was excited to try goat’s milk ice cream but wondered if it would mimic the tang and tart attributes of the cheeses. Happily, I found out that for the most part, though LaLoo’s has a noticeable goat’s milk flavor, it’s mild and smooth, leaving a pleasant sweet trace on the tongue, not a tart and tangy one.
LaLoo’s current line-up includes:
- Vanilla Snowflake: Sweet Cream & Vanilla
- Deep Chocolate: Black Cocoa & Rich Cocoa
- Rumplemint: Dark Chocolate & Garden Mint
- Capraccino: Italian Espresso Roast
The Deep Chocolate has a more fudge consistency than creamy, but delivers the deep chocolate experience the label promises. The Scharffen Berger dark chocolate (77 percent cacao) base plays well against the goat’s milk, delivering an unexpectedly rich flavor profile.
Rumplemint (pictured) is a stand-out flavor, perhaps because I love the fresh-from-the-garden sensation or perhaps for the deep dark chocolate chips and palate-pleasing finish. Either way, each bite delivers the wholesome taste of country living aka fresh food at its finest. I also found this flavor to have the closest consistency to cow’s milk ice cream.
Vanilla Snowflake may be the more difficult transitional ice cream for cow’s milk ice cream lovers to begin with. This is the one flavor I did find had a bit of the tang and tart attributes that chevres are famous for. Despite the intoxicating pure vanilla flavor I’m fond of, there’s no mistaking this flavor for anything other than a goat’s milk product.
If you’re a coffee lover, Capraccino will delight you with it’s intense, full-bodied and bold coffee flavor. Real espresso beans are blended into the ice cream and the overall experience is energizing. Though I haven’t tried it yet, I think Capraccino would make an excellent base for an Irish coffee smoothie.
Overall, I’m impressed with the LaLoo line of goat’s milk ice cream and will continue to stock my freezer with Rumplemint for days when I’m craving a smooth, rich and refreshing natural treat.
For diet-conscious folks, it’s also worth mentioning that Laloo’s goat’s milk ice creams pack in around half the calories of the leading cow’s milk ice creams and are consistently lower in sugar.
